hooray, the heater in our apartment works now!

The downside to spending 93 hours straight with a person is the mild depression that occurs as a result of that time expiring. Not having her beside me right now creates something of a void in my world which is impossible to fill with anything other than Emily.

Despite losing to Georgia while shivering from the wind, cold, and lack of sun, and shuddering from seeing dirty dirty #17 on the field again (A.J. Suggs - pronounced SUCKS), I have to upgrade this Thanksgiving to "Best 4-Day Weekend Ever" status anyway, for a variety of reasons not associated with the UGA game. Reasons like GT winning the basketball pre-season NIT championship by kicking the crap out of #1 UConn and #25 Texas Tech (Come on Bobby, you lost, throw a chair!). I think Emily's turned me into a basketball fan again. Reasons like staying up talking to Emily until 5:30 am. Reasons like only having 2 weeks of school left. And reasons like Emily is awesome. :)

This weekend has been so great. Speanding holidays with Emily is definitely the way to go. I don't think I've ever had as nice a thanksgiving as this one. I mean, yeah, I had to move some furniture out of the lakehouse, but that was a small price to pay in exchange for spending the whole weekend with a fantastic girl. Meeting the family was fun and not nearly as traumatic as I had been warned and prepared for. All in all a great weekend that will be made even better when we stomp on those dirty mutts from U(sic)GA. TO HELL WITH GEORGIA!!!

Wednesday, November 26, 2003

Happy turkey day to all. I'm off to Emily's lakehouse for the weekend. I'll be back on Saturday for the U(sic)GA game. If you need me in the meantime, call my cell.

Hooray for my mom - she's got an article in the Washington Post!

Why do so many cold medicines have sugar in them? Don't they know rest is the best way to help your immune system? I don't care if my medicine tastes like death, I want to go to sleep!

digital cable rules. all the channels are so crisp and clear. plus they've got all these badass music channels like the "metal" channel where I heard Avenged Sevenfold and Nevermore playing, so they've also got a good playlist. And their Big Band/Swing channel means I may never have to listen to my records again. We get like a hojillion channels now too, which is sweet, and I still get regular cable on my computer, so we gained so so so much and lost nothing. Except our home phone. ATTENTION: effective immediately, do not call me at home, the number has been disconnected. call my cell instead. also, comcast internet beats the pants off Bellsouth. I know, I'm shocked too. we're currently getting a download of 2911 kpbs, yes kids, that's nearly 3 Mbps, which is almost double the fastest speed we ever got with Bellsouth. And our upload, is 241 kbps, far above the meager 128 kbps that Bellsouth could provide. (All speeds tested at dslreports.com.) Today has been a fantastic day. And on top of all that, the code that I wrote for our senior project simulates perfectly. If only the hardware worked. Hmm... Huge props to Comcast. You guys rule.

If I didn't already have plans for Thanksgiving involving Emily, her grandparents' lakehouse, and the Georgia game, I'd be all over this party next weekend. If you live anywhere near Cleveland, you'd better be there, or Kathy will come find you and take your clothes away, and not in a good way.

senior design update: hardware assembled, labeled, and prepped for connection to microcontroller.

So I am going to live the dream finally. No home phone number. The Do No Call list has been moderately successful I'd say, but really, I don't use the phone, basically ever. The 5 people who call me (according to my last cell phone bill) always call my cell phone anyway, so why should I be paying for two phones when I only use one? I'll tell you why - DSL. However, Comcst has a pretty sweet deal if you get both digital cable and internet through them, which means I'll no longer need Bellsouth for DSL or the phone. Effective as soon as possible, I'll be land-line free and basking in the glow of digital cable so I don't have to watch Fox pulsating all the time, or TBS overshadowing Comedy Central. Thanks to Comcast for making my dream a reality.

So did we just skip over December, January, February, and March? Eating lunch at the shaft yesterday it was nice enough to be mid-April, and today feels about the same. I hate to complain about good weather, but this hot-cold-hot-cold thing is driving me insane. Dear weather, pick one and stay with it!

Today's word of the day is trickeration. Or perhaps I should say that it's today's non-word... Trickeration is a stupid non-word that someone, probably on ESPN, made up to describe an unorthodox play. The word you want here is trickery or trick play. For starters, those are real words... They work everywhere I've heard trickeration used, so let's please use real words from now on. "That was a nice piece of trickeration by the quarterback." Here you want to replace stupidness with the word trickery and in the following sentence you want to use trick play. "Get a load of this trickeration play by so-and-so." I'm not sure who started it, but this trickeration thing has spread like the plague that it is. It must be stopped. The english language is enough of a mess as it is.

Paper on Florence Knoll finished. Unfortunately, I won't be citing my ass in the bibliography, despite the fact that most of what I just finished writing came directly out of my ass. Oh well. Done and done. Time for bed.

Wednesday, November 12, 2003

It's awfully depressing to take a nap when I come from school, and wake up at 6:30 to find it pitch black outside. Makes me want to just roll over and sleep through the night. If only I didn't have a paper to write tonight.

My new roommate seems pretty cool. He's an AE junior, listens to Zepplin and the Doors through Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains, doesn't smoke, doesn't drink, has an XboX, and likes sports. Also, his friend who came by to check out the apartment seemed cool enough, so by association, Waqar must be cool too. I think we'll get along just fine once I learn how to pronounce his name correctly.

Have you seen that new commerical for some wrestling thing? A white guy in a jersey with some bulky Mr. T style jewelry tries to rap about something completely incomprehensible. Then he proclaims himself the "doctor of thugonomics." Why are people so utterly dumb?

So it looks like I might have a new roommate for spring semester finally, which is good news. More on this story as it develops.

Linko!! Press release about my dad's swearing-in ceremony.

Sunday, November 09, 2003

Just when I thought it was impossible for a "gurl band" from SoCal to be any worse than Baggage, I got an email from Girly Freak Show which proved me wrong.

So much work to do tomorrow and basically for the rest of the week, but at least I can look forward to (hopefully, please god, or else we won't be bowl-eligible) beating UNC next weekend when my parents are in town, as well as some good free meals.

Football: What the hell??? We lost to ACC whipping-boy Duke. Grrr.... I know we'd only played one game in the last month, but that's still no excuse for losing to Duke. We're not goign to say anything else about that game except that we shoudl never ever be the reason for Duke to tear down their goalposts. That's just wrong. Other stupid football upsets today: Miami losing to Tennessee, VT losing to Pitt, FSU losing to Clemson, Wake losing to UNC, and to a lesser extent, Iowa falling to Purdue (yes, Purdue really is that good, but Iowa is better, I swear, they just like to dissapoint me) and Michigan State succumbing to the pure luck of Ohio State (I've said it before and I'll say it again, Ohio State sucks - they just keep getting incredibly lucky somehow) and Mizzou dropping a close one at Colorado. I've decided to just write off the whole day of college football as a wacky side effect of the lunar eclipse tonight. Everything will be back to normal next week. Except of course that USC will be 100% guaranteed a trip to the Sugar Bowl as long as they don't lose.

I need to book flights at dusk more often. Flying home tonight as the sun set was the most amazing horizon I've ever seen. I was on the west side of the plane and I watched the horizon the whole way home. You could see the whole visible range of colors peeking over the edge of the earth off in the distance. So for almost a full hour I watched a fantastic sunset on the way home. And then we flew directly over downtown Atlanta on the way into the airport so I got a great bidr's eye view of the whole GT campus. Atlanta at night seems almost magical from way up in the sky. So many twinkly lights on streets I can name from 5000 feet up. I suppose some people already realize that, but let's just say I had a great flight home from DC tonight.

Oh!! And I got to see Tommy's senior thesis art exhibit as it was being put up. The show opens on Monday and I suggest that you go see it if you live in the NOVA area. I also met one of the other artists involved in the exhibition, who does a lot of facial studies in his paintings. He asked me to pose for him sometime because I have an intersting face apparently. Unfortunately, since I don't live up here, we did an improptu photo shoot so he could use my face at a later date. No one's ever asked me to model before; it was very flattering. :) More info on the exhibit, which is being held at GMU, can be found here.

I forgot to mention that I got to meet the U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan today, who is an amazing man. He reports directly to President Bush, and my dad will report directly to him. So, in a way, my dad is only one man away from the President. Also, I finally got to meet the current USAID Director, who is sadly (as a Bush apointee), a very republican man. Anyone who openly bashes NPR gets a thumbs down in my book, but he has been doing a good job and has been very supportive of the reconstruction effort in Afghanistan. If it weren't for having to wear a suit every day, I'd be much more inclined to go to work for the government myself. Oh well.

Tomorrow is also my brother's birthday, but since I'm bailing out for Atlanta in the afternoon, we had his celebration tonight, complete with fantastic Indian food and chocolate cake. Mmmm....

I have never been prouder to be the son of Jim Bever or had more respect for what my father does than today. The turnout for his swearing-in ceremony was the largest ever and every colleague I talked to said something to the effect of "your dad is the most qualified man for this job and probably the only one capable of making this project succeed." This is a great honor for him and also a great responsibility, but if the testimony of 50+ people who have worked for and with him isn't enough to convince me that he's doing the right thing, I don't know what would be. Congrats to my dad.

The ground is so beautiful at night from 30,000 feet up. So many lights, so far below, organized in nice neat clusters. Makes me want to be an astronaut like I did when I was 6. Then I could have views like this instead of just one city of lights at a time.

and away i go!

God bless online check-in for airlines. It doesn't seem very secure, but what the hell do I know? Now that I'm already checked in for my flight to DC tomorrow so I can head straight to the airport after class. Woo. Reminder: my cell phone doesn't work at my parents' house. Everywhere else in the Northern Virginia area, but not in the house. Go figure. So if anyone needs me between Thursday evening and Saturday afternoon, try the house (703-426-0785) before the cell.

I had a very nice lunch with Emily today, although it was mildly rained out and transfered to the student center instead of outside at the fountain. Stupid weather. Why did it have to 80 and sunny the last 5 days and then rain today of all days? Oh well. It was still fun reminiscing about the various tortures we (mostly me) inflicted on our spanish teachers throughout the years.

crap. stupid insomnia.

Today is turning out much better than anticipated. I figured that on 3.5 hours sleep I'd be a complete wreck by now. Apparenlty that's just going to happen later. But I forgot to set my alarm when I finally fell asleep and yet somehow miraculously woke up at 9:00 anyway. And then I got my Analog Filters test back, finally. I got a 95. My highest grade on an ECE test ever. So I felt I earned the right to blow off 3085 today. So I went looking for a Technique to read at the shaft since it's a gorgeous, sunny 80 degrees outside today. Sadly, I could only find Furman's school newspaper, god only knows why there was a stack of them in the post office instead of the 'Nique. So just when I thought all was lost, a mariachi band from Mexico showed up at the shaft to serenade everyone while we enjoyed the weather. My spanish is a little rusty, but it's nice to know my comprehension is still reasonably high even if I couldn't speak a word of it to save my life. Hooray for late-summer days in November. :)

well, we're going on 5 am now, and i'm still wide awake. somebody shoot me now because tomorrow is going to suck.

As long as I'm awake anyway, let's discuss winter break plans. They are rather contingent upon whether GT beats UVA in about 3 weeks. Assuming we beat Virginia, we are practically guaranteed the Gator Bowl in Jacksonville on New Year's Day, probably against Virginia Tech, which would be a damn fine game, and one I will try my hardest to be at. Our cause will be helped by NC State losing to either FSU or Maryland and Maryland losing to NC State, Virginia, or Wake. On the other hand, if we don't beat UVA, we're headed to either the Peach Bowl in the dirty Georgia Dome on Jan 2, or the Tangerine Bowl in Orlando on Dec 22. If we get the Peach Bowl invite, especially if it's against LSU again, screw it, we haven't won a Peach Bowl in school history (at least as far as I know), and it's in our own backyard. If however we pull the Tangerine Bowl, again, I'd make every effort to be there. We'd probably play Mizzou, which ought to be a good game too. Some people are talking Continental Tire Bowl (Charlotte, Dec 27). This will only happen if we lose to UVA and either UNC or Duke (if we lose to both of the ACC whipping boys, we don't deserve a bowl game, though we might get the Humanitarian Bowl against Boise State) or if the bowl directors are idiots and want to ignore the fact that we beat 2 of the teams currently ranked above us in the ACC and almost beat the third. Anyway, where I'm going with all of this crazy football talk is here: If we draw the Tangerine, I'll be staying in the southern states until after the game, then heading up to DC. If we get the more probable January game, I suppose I'll be on my way up to DC shortly after finals end, then back down here for New Year's and football before school starts again on the 5th. And somewhere in there, there will definitely be some time spent somewhere with Emily.

Why is it after 4 am and why I am I wide awake? It wouldn't be so bad if I could just go to school tomorrow and then come home and take a nap. But no, instead I have a meeting with stupidface. *sigh* "Tomorrow" is going to be a very long day.

This was possibly the best Halloween ever, thanks to Emily. I'm pretty sure it surpassed the previous title-holder - Webb's birthday (happy slightly belated b-day to Chris) scavenger hunt at Victoria's Secret.
